ON THE WAY OUT

Naeem Zessa is a stuntman who has stopped expecting the world to make much sense. His rule is simple: move in proportion to the probability. If the probability is close to zero, so is the movement.

Around him, however, the city is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Suspicious deaths are explained away as accidents. Protests spread without clear demands. A fellow stuntman Naeem thought was dead reappears as a living statue—and somehow becomes the accidental figurehead of a movement.

Naeem would prefer to remain on the edge of things, watching other people turn uncertainty into conviction. But as his relationship with Elizabeth deepens and the city’s strange momentum gathers around him, staying uninvolved begins to look less and less possible.

On the Way Out is a dryly comic literary novel about uncertainty, intimacy, public narratives, and what happens when a man who distrusts certainty finds himself caught inside other people’s versions of reality.
